The Academy of Business and Retail Management (ABRM) was established as a platform to further the progress of research and education in management, with a particular focus on the retail side of business. Generally speaking, development of knowledge in any discipline and its dissemination is enhanced when theory and practice complement each other. The knowledge bank that is created by theoretical research would be of limited use for the betterment of a society unless supported by applied research. (The phenomenal post Second World War growth experience of Japan validates this to a large extent)
This is all the more applicable when it comes to management education. August institutions of the likes of London Business School would not be where they are today if the practical side of research had not added substance of significant value to the teaching curriculum that such institutions follow to educate both their students and the business practitioners alike.
The greatness of an academic institution, therefore, lies in its research capability and contribution. The mission of the Academy lies here, to make it an internationally recognised body that will stand for the promotion of “excellence ” in management research and education.
It aims to achieve this goal through five major interventions, namely: • Publication of journal(s) relevant to various areas coming under the
ambit of management, with special reference to retail.
• International academic conferences.
• Corporate training programmes.
These interventions assume special significance when considered in the context of developing countries. A great number of potentially talented students have to forgo quality education, particularly in management these days, given the financial requirements for such courses. Through the dissemination of knowledge that these interventions are aimed at, the Academy, in a modest way, will try to foster and nurture talent in these countries and will thus have a philanthropic underpinning in its approach so far as its service and social responsibility to the society is concerned.
The Academy’s journal The Academy publishes the journal Journal of Business and Retail Management Research (www.jbrmr.com) twice yearly, in April and October. It has already received worldwide recognition as a major source of knowledge in the retail sector of business. Articles are submitted for publication by scholars from around the world for instance UK, USA, Sweden, India, Australia, Jordan amongst others. It is now listed with three well known directories , namely EBSCO, Ulrich and Cables
International Academic Conferences Conferences, both national and international, are organized towards fulfilling the mission of the Academy. At present, the Academy organises four regular academic conferences annually, in London (UK), Pune (India) and Boston (USA). (All submissions are subject to a double blind review process. It is essential that all manuscripts are professionally proofread prior to submission. All such manuscripts should be according to the submission guidelines. No paper will be accepted that does not follow the required format.)
Corporate Training Programmes
The Academy organizes Management Development Programmes (MDPs) of short duration on topical issues to further the education and managerial abilities of those who are already in business. Participants can either be sponsored by their respective organisations or undergo the training at their own expense. Certificates are issued to all participants at the end of the programme. With its wealth of experience in training business executives in ‘Leadership for Enterprise Development’ legislators in ‘Legislative Leadership’ internationally, the Academy is well based to advise and support a variety of sectors.
